There's a reason so many couples fall for Guardswell Farm the moment they see it. Tucked into the Perthshire countryside, it's the kind of venue that doesn't need much dressing up — so bright and set against the rolling hills, it's truly breathtaking. As a wedding photographer, it's one of my favourite spots to shoot, and Danny and Maeve's wedding day showed me why.
This wasn't a day built around tradition for tradition's sake. It was built around friends. Good food, good drinks, and a dance floor that never really emptied. From the first look to the last dance, the focus of the day was simple: have fun with the people you love. There was none of the stiffness that can creep into a wedding timeline — just an easy, unhurried flow between getting ready, the ceremony, and a reception that felt more like a brilliant party thrown among friends than a formal affair.
That's Guardswell Farm at its best. The venue's relaxed, barn-and-garden setup practically invites guests to relax into the day rather than sit through it.
Catering can make or break the atmosphere of a wedding, and Wild Rover Food brought exactly the right energy. Their food was generous, unpretentious, and clearly made with care — the kind of spread that gets guests talking as much as the couple do. It suited Guardswell Farm's laid-back charm perfectly, and it gave the day a proper sense of place: hearty, local, and completely unfussy.
One of my favourite touches of the day was the espresso martini hour — a smart, stylish way to bridge the gap between dinner and dancing. As the light started to dip, guests gathered for a round of espresso martinis before the band or DJ kicked things off. It was a small detail, but it set the tone for the rest of the night: playful, a little indulgent, and full of energy. By the time the dancing started, the whole room was ready for it.
Throughout the day, I shot a good portion of this wedding on 35mm film, alongside my usual digital work. There's something about film that suits a day like this — the grain, the warmth, the slightly imperfect quality that feels more like a memory than a photograph. It's a documentary approach: candid, unposed, and true to how the day actually felt, rather than how it was staged to look.
For couples drawn to a timeless, editorial-but-honest style of wedding photography, film is often the missing piece. It doesn't chase trends — it just ages well, the same way a good love story does.
